How to select the right electrical compressor ?

In de category How do I select the right machine ?
Buying a compressor that is too small will waste valuable time and money. Buying a compressor that is too large will waste valuable energy and money.

If you are not using the air compressor inside or you need to move it around your facility, please refer to the section:
How to select my portable air compressor

There are 2 parameters that determine the size of an air compressor 1) Required operating pressure (Bar or PSI)
2) Maximum required air usage (Capacity in cfm,, m³/min, ltr/sec)

1.) What is the maximum required operating pressure?
This depend very much on what type of work you are doing , for example
Air tools require about 6 Bar of operating pressure, typically we choose an air compressor rated at 7 or 7.5 Bar. This has to do with loss of air pressure in your air tubing system. Blasting work (sand blasting) requires often the same working pressure. However many of those who are working with blasting systems want more pressure . Sometimes up to 9 of even 10 Bar.

Air compressors for truck maintenance shops require in common 13 Bar (for pumping up truck or bus air tyres)

Air compressor for engine starting air typically produce 30 Bar or more.

2.) What is the maximum required air usage?
Add up all of the air tools that are to be used at the same time. When looking at the compressor, add approximately 30% to the determined air capacity. This will allow for a reasonable buffer against unknown or uncommon compressor usage.
Do not simply add up all of the air tools that will be used throughout the work day since this will produce an inflated capacity.

Please find below a list of some air tools and there average air usag at 6,5 Bar (90 PSI) Angle Disc Grinder – 180mm / 7” 140- 220 ltr/min (5-8 cfm)
Chisel/Hammer 85- 310 ltr/min (3-11 cfm) Cut-Off Tool 115- 285 ltr/min ( 4-10 cfm) Drill, Reversible or Straight-Line 85- 170 ltr/min (3-6 cfm) Dual Sander 310-370 ltr/min (11-13 cfm) Grease Gun 115 ltr/min (4 cfm)
Impact Wrench - 3/8” 70-100 ltr/min (2.5-3.5 cfm) Impact Wrench - ½” 115-140 ltr/min (4-5 cfm) Impact Wrench - 1” 285 ltr/min (10 cfm)
Needle Scalar 220-455 ltr/min (8-16 cfm) Nibbler 115 ltr/min (4 cfm)
Ratchet - ¼” 70-100 ltr/min (2.5-3.5 cfm) Ratchet - 3/8” 125-140 ltr/min (4.5-5 cfm)
Speed Saw

Sandblasting 7mm nozzle@ 7 Bar Sandblasting 10mm nozzle@ 7 Bar
140 ltr/min (5 cfm)

5000 ltr/min (180cfm) 7000 ltr/min (260cfm)

significantly less expensive to buy and run and require less overall maintenance. If electrical power is not always available
then the convenience of a gasoline engine driven compressor will be the way to go. They offer the best in portability and
work area flexibility.

Do I need an air receiver tank with my air compressor?

The size of the compressor tank, usually measured in liter or m³, should be determined by the overall type of usage.
If the usage is in short quick concentrated bursts, such as an air nailer, then a small tank size can be used. If the unit is to sustain long periods of usage, such as a board sander, impact wrench or sandblasting work, a larger tank size will be necessary.
Often it is a combination of those two types of usage, therefor take the larger air receiver. This will also have a positive influence on the compressor start/stop or modulation control.

As a rule of thumb you might use the maximum capacity in ltr/min devided by 2 will result in possible air receiver size.
For example air compressor capacity is 400 ltr/min, air receiver size is 400/2=200 ltr. This can vary by type of application , feel free to call us for more advise +32 56 61 67 01 or send an email to sales@machinery resale.be

Power
Often a stationary air compressor is limited to the availble power (Current and Tension) Assure yourself you have enough power in your facility to start and run the air compressor. We advise you to cal lus for free advise on: +32 56 61 67 01

Budget
Your available budget sometimes restrict the choise you have in number of selected air compressor. We are there to help you find the right compressor for every budget

Ones you have determined the required pressure, capacity, power and budget you can go to advanced search to fill in these criteria and you will find the right compressor for your needs.
